Ages 9–12 Years: Songwriting Workshop

Storytelling and Character Development Through Music 🧚🏼

1 hOnline

Service Description

In small-group songwriting workshops for ages 9–12, students build intermediate skills in structure, melody, and lyrical craft within a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming environment. This workshop is combined with singers, allowing songwriters to collaborate with peer vocalists to bring their original projects to life in a professional-style lab setting. Instruction emphasizes storytelling with character, setting, and plot, while strengthening the use of metaphor, rhyme, and imagery to shape verses, choruses, and bridges into cohesive, engaging songs. The MIDI keyboard supports harmony, phrasing, and accompaniment, with students practicing common progressions, inversions, and voicings. Improvisation and ear training build fluency, helping melodies connect naturally with lyrics. These piano skills enable songwriters to communicate their musical ideas clearly to their singing partners, ensuring a smooth collaborative process during the development of a track. Production, already established in earlier years, is expanded at this stage and serves as the primary bridge for peer collaboration. Using BandLab for Education and MIDI, students arrange songs with greater independence, layer instruments, and balance acoustic textures with electronic ones that enhance storytelling. These digital tools allow songwriters to create polished backing tracks for singers to record over, mirroring a real-world production environment. Workshops are trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, utilizing breakout rooms for both peer-to-peer partnerships and essential one-on-one time with the instructor. These smaller spaces allow songwriters to work directly with singers to workshop melodies or record vocal takes in a focused, social atmosphere. Structured activities, session recordings, and semi-annual progress reports track growth, with families having access to secure chat for additional support. By the end of this stage, students demonstrate a stronger command of lyric writing, melody, piano, and production—developing songs that reflect growing independence and a clear artistic identity through successful collaboration.

Booking Policy

At Once Upon a Voice, we are committed to creating a smooth and supportive learning experience for all students and their families. Our policies are designed with a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach to meet diverse needs while maintaining fairness and consistency. Parents or guardians must remain reachable during workshops for students under 18 in case of technical difficulties, as we may need your assistance in troubleshooting. Our team is available to provide support and minimize disruption. Please note that only registered students may participate. If multiple children wish to join, each must be enrolled individually to ensure an equitable experience for all participants. Consistent attendance is vital for student progress in workshops. Although sessions cannot be rescheduled, students who miss a session can access playback recordings to review the material. If a student arrives late, the session will still end at the originally scheduled time to respect the group’s schedule. In cases of unforeseen delays, please notify us so we can accommodate your needs while maintaining the group’s structure. Frequent cancellations, tardiness, or no-shows disrupt the learning process and may result in limited scheduling options or dismissal. Open communication and a commitment to the agreed-upon schedule help ensure the group’s success. Students unable to continue indefinitely due to physical or mental health concerns may request prorated refunds, calculated from the date we receive medical documentation. Temporary absences do not qualify for refunds unless the instructor is unavailable, but students are encouraged to use accommodations such as recorded sessions to stay engaged. By following these guidelines, we can ensure a fair, equitable, and engaging learning environment for all participants. Let us know how we can best support you on your musical journey.
