Ages 8-12: Trial Songwriting Workshop
Storytelling and Character Development Through Music 🧚🏿
Service Description
In our small-group songwriting workshops for ages 8–12, students develop their creative voice in a supportive, collaborative setting. These weekly sessions guide students through writing songs with clear structures—verses, choruses, and bridges—while exploring lyrics that express their ideas, emotions, and lived experiences. Students strengthen their songwriting through metaphor, imagery, and musical storytelling, crafting meaningful pieces across a variety of genres. Piano is taught as a compositional tool for creating melodies, chord progressions, and harmonic structure. Using their MIDI keyboard and BandLab account, students build guided demos by layering sounds, arranging beats, and shaping song form in a digital audio workstation (DAW). These music production skills are introduced in age-appropriate ways, encouraging exploration while establishing a strong technical foundation. Workshops are trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, honoring each student’s pace, communication style, and emotional needs. Group sizes are capped at six students to ensure personalized instruction, with one-on-one support integrated into each session. Each workshop includes targeted feedback, collaborative discussion, and individualized activities that foster technical growth and creative confidence. Families receive monthly progress updates and access to session recordings for review and reflection. Students also complete asynchronous mid-year and year-end performance projects to celebrate their artistic development. These workshops nurture confidence, connection, and self-expression—supporting students as lyricists, composers, and musical storytellers in a space designed for exploration and growth.

Booking Policy
At Once Upon a Voice, we are committed to creating a smooth and supportive learning experience for all students and their families. Our policies are designed with a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach to meet diverse needs while maintaining fairness and consistency. Parents or guardians must remain reachable during workshops for students under 18 in case of technical difficulties, as we may need your assistance troubleshooting. Our team and Muzie, the platform we use for workshops, are available to provide support and minimize disruption. Please note that only registered students may participate. If multiple children wish to join, each must be enrolled individually to ensure an equitable experience for all participants. Consistent attendance is vital for student progress in workshops. Although sessions cannot be rescheduled, students who miss a session can access playback recordings on Muzie to review the material. If a student arrives late, the session will still end at the originally scheduled time to respect the group’s schedule. In cases of unforeseen delays, please notify us so we can accommodate your needs while maintaining the group’s structure. Frequent cancellations, tardiness, or no-shows disrupt the learning process and may result in limited scheduling options or dismissal. Open communication and a commitment to the agreed-upon schedule help ensure the group’s success. Students unable to continue indefinitely due to physical or mental health concerns may request prorated refunds, calculated from the date we receive medical documentation. Temporary absences do not qualify for refunds unless the instructor is unavailable, but students are encouraged to use accommodations such as recorded sessions to stay engaged. By following these guidelines, we can ensure a fair, equitable, and engaging learning environment for all participants. Let us know how we can best support you on your musical journey.
