Ages 6–9 Years: Songwriting Workshop

Exploring the English Language with Songs 🧚🏼‍♀️

1 hOnline

Service Description

In small-group songwriting workshops for ages 6–9, students are introduced to musical storytelling through playful, developmentally appropriate instruction that nurtures language growth and creative self-expression. This workshop is combined with singers, allowing songwriters to collaborate with peer vocalists to bring their original projects to life. Guided by a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach, workshops honor each child’s communication style, attention span, and emotional readiness while fostering a social, collaborative environment. Students craft melodies and lyrics through imitation, call-and-response, and rhythm-based prompts. Rhyme, repetition, and imagery are paired with phonics and sequencing to connect sounds and early narrative structure. By working with singers in the group, songwriters learn to tailor their lyrics and melodies for a performer, seeing their stories move from the page to a live vocal performance. Piano supports melodic development and harmonic awareness, with students practicing finger numbers, white key names, and basic hand position while exploring short 3–5 note melodies. Color-coded keyboards and kinesthetic tools make phrasing and form accessible across learning styles, helping songwriters map out the structures for their peer collaborations and vocal arrangements. Production builds on skills from early childhood classes, now applied to original songs. Using a MIDI keyboard and Ableton Live Intro, students use loops, layer sounds, and make choices that highlight mood and expression. These production tools serve as the bridge for collaboration, allowing songwriters to build tracks that their singing partners can record over and explore in real-time. Workshops are trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, utilizing breakout rooms for peer-to-peer partnerships and essential one-on-one time with the instructor. These smaller spaces allow songwriters to work directly with singers on collaborative demos, ensuring every student has the support to grow at their own pace. Weekly activities, session recordings, and semi-annual progress reports keep families engaged and connected to the creative process.

At Once Upon a Voice, we are committed to creating a smooth and supportive learning experience for all students and their families. Our policies are designed with a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach to meet diverse needs while maintaining fairness and consistency. Parents or guardians must remain reachable during workshops for students under 18 in case of technical difficulties, as we may need your assistance in troubleshooting. Our team is available to provide support and minimize disruption. Please note that only registered students may participate. If multiple children wish to join, each must be enrolled individually to ensure an equitable experience for all participants. Consistent attendance is vital for student progress in workshops. Although sessions cannot be rescheduled, students who miss a session can access playback recordings to review the material. If a student arrives late, the session will still end at the originally scheduled time to respect the group’s schedule. In cases of unforeseen delays, please notify us so we can accommodate your needs while maintaining the group’s structure. Frequent cancellations, tardiness, or no-shows disrupt the learning process and may result in limited scheduling options or dismissal. Open communication and a commitment to the agreed-upon schedule help ensure the group’s success. Students unable to continue indefinitely due to physical or mental health concerns may request prorated refunds, calculated from the date we receive medical documentation. Temporary absences do not qualify for refunds unless the instructor is unavailable, but students are encouraged to use accommodations such as recorded sessions to stay engaged. By following these guidelines, we can ensure a fair, equitable, and engaging learning environment for all participants. Let us know how we can best support you on your musical journey.
