Ages 3–5 Years: Music Class

Phonics Foundations, Singing, and Music Creation 🧙🏻‍♀️

45 minOnline

Service Description

This trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming group class helps preschoolers and kindergartners build early foundations in music through singing, songwriting, and playful exploration. As the oldest members of our shared 45-minute early childhood session, these students are welcome to stay for the full duration, building upon the sensory and movement work established with the infants and toddlers earlier in the hour. Families with younger enrolled siblings are invited to participate together, as the multi-level design allows everyone to engage meaningfully. Children explore pitch, rhythm, phrasing, and dynamics through language-rich songs, movement, and storytelling. Phonics elements—like rhyme, sequencing, and word families—are woven naturally into lyric creation, supporting musical storytelling while reinforcing clarity of sound. Call-and-response, echo singing, and collaborative songwriting introduce melody, structure, and expressive phrasing in ways that connect directly to music-making. By learning alongside younger peers, older students gain confidence and leadership as they model these skills within our musical community. Students are introduced to musical symbols and structures such as 4/4 meter, bar lines, repeat signs, and the music alphabet (A–G) with the help of visuals and color coding. These tools build comfort with timing, form, and notation while keeping activities engaging and age-appropriate throughout the 45-minute flow. This integrated structure ensures that as the session progresses, the focus shifts toward these more complex concepts, preparing preschoolers and kindergartners for the next steps in their formal musical training. Instruction is inclusive of nonspeaking students, AAC users, and children with diverse sensory and communication needs. Visual aids, repetition, gesture, and movement are embedded to ensure every student can engage musically at their own pace, whether they are joining for the final portion of the class or participating from the beginning. This collaborative setting honors each child's individual communication style and sensory preferences, ensuring equitable access to musical expression for all. Weekly assignments, in-class feedback, and semi-annual progress reports help families extend learning at home across all developmental milestones. By centering music education within this unified 45-minute structure, this class nurtures creativity, confidence, and a strong foundation for future study.

Booking Policy

At Once Upon a Voice, we are committed to creating a smooth and supportive learning environment for all students and their families. These guidelines are designed with a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach to address diverse needs while ensuring fairness and consistency. A parent or legal guardian must remain on screen with the student throughout the group lesson. Only registered students may participate, and if multiple children wish to join, each must be enrolled individually to ensure appropriate attention and resources for everyone. Due to the structured nature of group lessons, rescheduling is not possible. However, students who miss a session can access a recording to review the material and stay on track. If students or their parents arrive late for a group class, the session will still end at the scheduled time to respect the group’s schedule. If unforeseen circumstances cause a delay, please notify us so we can accommodate your needs while maintaining the group’s flow. Consistent attendance and active participation are essential for progress. Frequent absences, tardiness, or failure to meet the required parent involvement may result in limited scheduling options or dismissal from the studio. While we are always open to discussing individual needs, we ask for a commitment to the agreed-upon schedule to ensure the best experience for everyone. Students who are unable to continue classes indefinitely due to physical or mental health concerns may request prorated refunds, calculated from the date we receive medical documentation. Temporary absences do not qualify for refunds unless the instructor is unavailable, but students can access accommodations such as recorded sessions to stay engaged. By following these policies, we can create a fair, engaging, and effective learning environment. Let us know how we can best support your family’s musical journey.
