Service Description

In small-group songwriting workshops for ages 15–18, students undertake professional-level study, refining their craft and developing a distinct artistic voice. This workshop is combined with singers, placing songwriters in the role of producer and creative director within a high-level collaborative lab. Instruction emphasizes melodic sophistication, lyrical nuance, and authentic self-expression, preparing teens to create songs ready for live performance, studio recording, and a college portfolio in contemporary music. Training is rooted in popular and commercial styles, including pop, R&B, hip hop, rock, country, and folk. By working with peer vocalists, songwriters learn to manage the professional dynamics of a recording session, tailoring their arrangements and direction to bring out a performer's best take. Piano supports advanced arranging, transposing, and collaborative rehearsal, ensuring songwriters can communicate complex harmonic ideas and lead their partners through a professional rehearsal process. Production training in Ableton Live Suite serves as the primary workspace for these collaborations. Songwriters build sophisticated tracks and learn the fundamentals of the mixing and mastering process to create high-quality demos. However, they are encouraged to collaborate with specialized mixing and mastering engineers to gain additional perspective on their work, learning the value of bringing fresh sets of ears to a project to meet professional industry standards. This digital environment mirrors a professional studio, where songwriters learn to balance their creative vision with technical execution. Workshops are trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, utilizing breakout rooms for both intensive peer-to-peer partnerships and essential one-on-one time with the instructor. These smaller spaces act as professional studio suites where songwriters and singers collaborate on tracking, arrangement tweaks, and creative direction in a focused, social environment. Structured group activities, session recordings, and semi-annual progress reports track growth, with families having access to secure chat for ongoing support. By the end of this stage, students graduate with a portfolio of original songs that demonstrates the individuality and technical skill needed for the stage, studio, or college-level study.

Booking Policy

At Once Upon a Voice, we are committed to creating a smooth and supportive learning experience for all students and their families. Our policies are designed with a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach to meet diverse needs while maintaining fairness and consistency. Parents or guardians must remain reachable during workshops for students under 18 in case of technical difficulties, as we may need your assistance in troubleshooting. Our team is available to provide support and minimize disruption. Please note that only registered students may participate. If multiple children wish to join, each must be enrolled individually to ensure an equitable experience for all participants. Consistent attendance is vital for student progress in workshops. Although sessions cannot be rescheduled, students who miss a session can access playback recordings to review the material. If a student arrives late, the session will still end at the originally scheduled time to respect the group’s schedule. In cases of unforeseen delays, please notify us so we can accommodate your needs while maintaining the group’s structure. Frequent cancellations, tardiness, or no-shows disrupt the learning process and may result in limited scheduling options or dismissal. Open communication and a commitment to the agreed-upon schedule help ensure the group’s success. Students unable to continue indefinitely due to physical or mental health concerns may request prorated refunds, calculated from the date we receive medical documentation. Temporary absences do not qualify for refunds unless the instructor is unavailable, but students are encouraged to use accommodations such as recorded sessions to stay engaged. By following these guidelines, we can ensure a fair, equitable, and engaging learning environment for all participants. Let us know how we can best support you on your musical journey.
