Ages 12–15 Years: Songwriting Workshop

Crafting Powerful Songs with Literary Devices 🧚🏾‍♂️

1 hOnline

Service Description

In small-group songwriting workshops for ages 12–15, students build advanced craft while gaining confidence and clarity in their writing. Instruction focuses on structure, melodic contour, and expressive lyrics, guiding students to experiment with metaphor, imagery, and point of view as they grow in skill and self-expression. Piano supports composition through advanced chords, voicings, and improvisation, while contextual music theory taught through the Nashville Number System and Roman numerals helps students understand harmonic flow. Production training in Ableton Live Suite introduces expressive effects, resampling, and synthesis, showing how sound supports mood and storytelling. Workshops are trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming, with structured group activities, session recordings, and semi-annual progress reports ensuring accountability. Families also have access to secure chat for ongoing support. By the end of this stage, students write with growing independence and creativity, equipped with the tools and discipline needed for professional-level study in their later teen years.

Booking Policy

At Once Upon a Voice, we are committed to creating a smooth and supportive learning experience for all students and their families. Our policies are designed with a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming approach to meet diverse needs while maintaining fairness and consistency. Parents or guardians must remain reachable during workshops for students under 18 in case of technical difficulties, as we may need your assistance troubleshooting. Our team and Muzie, the platform we use for workshops, are available to provide support and minimize disruption. Please note that only registered students may participate. If multiple children wish to join, each must be enrolled individually to ensure an equitable experience for all participants. Consistent attendance is vital for student progress in workshops. Although sessions cannot be rescheduled, students who miss a session can access playback recordings on Muzie to review the material. If a student arrives late, the session will still end at the originally scheduled time to respect the group’s schedule. In cases of unforeseen delays, please notify us so we can accommodate your needs while maintaining the group’s structure. Frequent cancellations, tardiness, or no-shows disrupt the learning process and may result in limited scheduling options or dismissal. Open communication and a commitment to the agreed-upon schedule help ensure the group’s success. Students unable to continue indefinitely due to physical or mental health concerns may request prorated refunds, calculated from the date we receive medical documentation. Temporary absences do not qualify for refunds unless the instructor is unavailable, but students are encouraged to use accommodations such as recorded sessions to stay engaged. By following these guidelines, we can ensure a fair, equitable, and engaging learning environment for all participants. Let us know how we can best support you on your musical journey.
