Phonation

About

Explore how your voice works—and how to use it musically. This course focuses on the voice as both a physical instrument and an expressive tool. You will learn how phonation occurs, how anatomy and identity shape vocal sound, and how to write, arrange, and produce music that centers the voice. The course is divided into four interconnected sections. In the Voice section, you will explore how the vocal folds, larynx, and breath work together to create sound. You will gain insight into muscular coordination, vocal registers, and how anatomy influences tone, control, and expression. In Songwriting, you will learn how to craft melodies that match the voice performing them—whether that’s your own, a collaborator’s, or an AI-generated vocal. This section focuses on aligning range, phrasing, and identity with clear, expressive melodic design. The Piano section helps you develop accompaniment and arrangement skills that support vocal phrasing and emotional storytelling. You will learn how to create space, highlight vocal tone, and play in ways that elevate the singer rather than compete with them. In Producing, you will build vocal-centered tracks by shaping textures, timing, and mix decisions around the singer’s sound. You will learn how to record and edit vocals with clarity and care, while preserving emotional authenticity—whether you are working with your own voice, someone else’s, or AI vocals. This course is designed for students of all experience levels and communication styles, including those who sing, write for singers, use AAC, or explore voice through nontraditional means. All instruction is trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and structured to support your creative goals.
